If you read our news column here at Longevity By Nature, you know the importance of telomeres and how their length plays a direct role in a person’s lifespan. We were intrigued to learn of a new study surrounding telomeres and Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS).
For those not familiar with PWS, the National Institute of Health describes it as a complex genetic condition that affects many parts of the body. In infancy, this condition is causes weak muscle tone (hypotonia), feeding difficulties, poor growth, and delayed development.
Prader-Willi Syndrome Findings
Many adults with PWS have experienced advanced aging in the form of many age-associated diseases like heart disease or type-2 diabetes. The study, which appeared in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, theorized that shortened telomeres contributed to this unnatural aging, and potentially the onset of age-related health problems.
Researchers concluded, “The shorter telomeres might play a role in the premature ageing in PWS, independent of GH. Longitudinal research is needed to determine the influence of LTL on ageing in PWS.”
You can read more about the findings in the study: Evidence for accelerated biological ageing in young adults with Prader-Willi syndrome.
While hormonal therapy and other approaches have helped people suffering from PWS, there has not been any conclusion that the lengthening of telomeres in patients with PWS would minimize the conditions.
For healthy adults, not suffering from PWS, there has been great interest in slowing down the aging process. Much of the new science and medicine focuses on halting the shortening of telomeres. In fact, one clinical trial showed that supplements could actually lengthen telomeres and reduce cellular age.
